1TB External Hard Drive

A 1TB External Hard Drive

Whether you’re looking for a cheap 1tb external hard drive or one of the best external hard drives available on the market we’re pretty sure we have the right hard drive for you. With several years of experience in both reviewing hardware compononents and going through quite a number of external hard drives myself I’d say I have a good grasp of what to look for in the best 1TB external hard drive.

The main thing you’ll notice on this site is we don’t specifically look at one external hard drive. We’re not owned or paid by any of the big hard drive names so we’re free to review and suggest any hard drive we choose. We also know that different people need different features from their hard drives so we look at various options trying to find you the best one.
1tb external hard driveYou might also notice that most of our reviews are rated pretty highly. We don’t, for example, look at a lacie 1tb external hard drive? and review that individual model saying whether it’s good or bad. Instead we look for the best 1tb external hard drive for backups or the cheapest 1tb external hard drive. Perhaps a 1tb external hard drive with the fastest file transfers or the most secure. There’s also of course the best overall hard drive but you see what I mean?

There’s at least hundreds of poor quality and over priced external hard drives out there. You could pay more for a low quality 500gb external hard drive than you might for some of the better 1tb drives. But we don’t bother reviewing dries like these. It wastes our time saying the same old thing about hard drives we don’t suggest you use – and it wastes your time reading them. Instead we find good external hard drives and suggest them instead. Saves us both time and helps you find a better external hard drive to suit you needs without having to trawl through a load of useless ones first.

Best 1tb External Hard Drive

So there’s no one best 1tb external hard drive really. They all have different qualities and features and that suits different people. We look at the individual features of each drive and suggest it as an alternative depending on what you need. If you don’t really have something specific in mind from your hard drive then there’s also the quiz to help you find the best 1tb external hard drive to suit you and our #1 rated hard drive which we feel is a good solid choice in any situation.

There’s a lot of features we look for in an external hard drive. Whether you want a small usb powered external hard drive or USB stick to carry around in your pocket or a beefy 1 terabyte external hard drive the same standards still apply.

  • Capacity

This is usually pretty straight forward if you want a 1 tb drive. But there’s other choices from a 500 gig external hard drive up to a 2 terabyte external hard drive and they actually go much higher. Although it gets pretty expensive if you go any higher than that and it really makes more fiscal sense to buy two smaller ones than one big one if you’re going over 3 terabytes.
You want to make sure you have enough room for the files you want to hold and it’s always better to go bigger rather than smaller. So get an idea of how much storage space you think you’ll need and then add some to it. This way you not only have some ‘wiggle’ room but you also guard yourself against needing to upgrade so closely in the future. It’ll save you bother and money as it’s much cheaper to get one a little bigger now then buy a completly new one later. Again, unless you are going over 3 tb but that’s a different scenario for most people.

  • Transfer Speeds

Some people don’t mind sitting waiting around for their files to transfer but it drives others mad. It’s also situational but basically it’s a better idea to have a hard drive which is going to transfer files faster than slower. This comes down to the connections (mainly whether it’s USB 2.0 or 3.0 since FireWire is pretty much dead these days) and the read/write speed of the hard drive itself.
I usually put capacity and security ahead of this feature myself but that’s because I’d rather wait a little longer than risk having my 1tb external hard drive break down on me.

  • Security

Security in an external hard drive is two-fold. Firstly you want good rugged durability in the drive itself. A lot of the older and poorer quality external hard drives on the market would easily break down under too much stress. In fact a lot of them would break down locked in an air tight safe on the moon. What you want is an external hard drive which can take a beating. I don’t necessarily? mean you need to be able to run over it in your car (although with some of them – that’s an option) but you don’t need it breaking apart after dropping off your desk.
The other side of security for a 1 tb external hard drive is features like encryption and password protection. The risk you run with any external hard drive is that it can be stolen or accidently mistaken for another. Encrypting or password protecting your files means your more sensitive data won’t be seen by unwanted eyes.

  • Portability

This is more important for some people than it is others. Some will want to carry their external hard drives around in their bags or pockets while others will have theirs firmly on the desk. Size and weight is important to look at but you really want to consider how rugged the drive is as well if you want to carry it around. Also consider getting a hard drive cover if you’re carrying it around and something which is not on a thin base if it’s destined for your desk. A lot of hard drives have been damaged by falling one too many times because of a thin base.

  • Compatibility

Much less of an issue these days but still a feature. If you want the best 1tb external hard drive then you want to make sure it’s compatible with current operating systems and not just the one you use. You want to be able to transfer files with other computers if need by so you at least want Windows and Apple Mac compatibility. Most hard drives will say on the side what they work with and, as I say, this is much less of an issue now.

Among the three types, the USB 2.0 and firewire offer the fastest interface.
  • Speed. This is inclusive of rotation speed, PATA and the SATA specification. It is necessary to consider the transfer rates of the hard drive. A high speed transfer rate is recommended since long transfers rates slow down the computer when transferring larger files. In addition, the rational speed will determine the speed of the drives spinning and have direct effect on entire speed in which the data can be accessed.
  • The size. When shopping for a cheap external hard drive, it is necessary to consider the size in GBs that it can store. 1 Terabyte External Hard Drive

1 Terabyte External Hard Drive Importance

People use a 1 terabyte external hard drive to keep their data safe and increase computer storage space. Today in such a fast paced world, the demands for speed and space seem ever increasing. Everyone wants more and more speed, and, so, everyone wants more space to store their data and moreover, they also want to have a backup of their data so that it is secure as well. You always hear stories about computers doing something which costs people a lot of work. You don’t want this to be you so get your hands on a 1TB external hard drive and get your work backed up!

Using a 1 Terabyte External Hard Drive

It’s not just for backups that people use external hard drives. Today, hard drives seem to be insecure from data safety storage point of view as such sppedy software installations and uninstallations have made them vulnerable to crashes and so data loss is a fear which is always associated with the hard drives. Moreover, when an individual needs to carry his data, be it his/her official presentations or music, videos, photos or anything else, it is not always possible to carry the laptops and it is almost impossible to carry the desktops on the go. Some of the bigger 1 TB external drives can be heavy to carry around, but most of the better ones are light.

1 terabyte external hard driveSo, a need arises for the removable storage. Removable storage gives us a possibility and a feature to keep a copy of our data so that it is safe and we have a copy of it somewhere else which can be referred at the time of data loss or data updation or retrieval and it also offers the facility to carry our data with us while travelling or going out. Removable storage devices are available in various sizes and many companies are producing and selling a large number of such devices in the market. We usually know them by the name pen drives or flash drives. CDs and DVDs also come under the removable storage but they have a limitation. That is, data cannot be modified once written on these storage media so they are good enough from the data safety point of view, but prove a bit expensive for the common man as he or she has to buy a new disk every time back up of some new data is to be taken. Also special care is to be taken for them as they are more prone to damages. So, flash drives are more preferred.

So with all these alternatives of storage medias to carry your data around why would anyone use an external hard drive, let alone a 1 terabyte external hard drive?

Why Use a 1 Terabye External Hard Drive?

But the size, that is the storage capacity of the flash drives is usually unable to meet the present storage demands as the software video music downloads are craving for more and more space. Here comes the demand for the external hard drives.

External hard drive offers us with the high data transfer rates, better response during responsive scenarios and large storage space. So, in such an internet facilitated or addicted world rather, buying a small sized external hard drive is just a waste of money. So, looking towards this internet era, the optimized external hard drive to suit everyone’s needs and pockets is a 1 terabyte external hard drive. A 1 terabyte external hard drive is enough for most of the Home-PC purposes and data backup point of view as well. It has enough storage capacity for an individual to store his or her music, videos, movies, softwares and games etc.

You can, of course, get a smaller hard drive. Some brands still make the older 250gb external hard drive models. The thing is, the price difference is almost nothing since a 1TB hard drive is the new standard. Laptop External Hard Drive

About Laptop External Hard Drive Models

A laptop external hard drive is not exactly an alien concept to most people. Each user sooner or later will face with a situation, when it becomes necessary or required to expand memory capacity of your laptop hard drive, for example, you just want to have some important data always with you. For most users, working with a small amount of data, in this case, the best would be a flash drive or optical drive (of course, RW). But, what if your data volumes are too large and you want to protect your files? In such cases, it becomes crucial to buy an external hard drive. On it you can easily record data containing information of hundreds of gigabytes, and most important is that it can be connected to pretty much any kind of computer or laptop.

Replacing a hard drive in a desktop computer is hard enough for most people but a replacing a laptop hard drive can be a real pain (depending on the model of laptop). The portability and ease of use is what makes a laptop external hard drive and popular choice. And a 1TB external hard drive is a great mix of value and capacity, a perfect addition for any laptop.

Benefits of a Laptop External Hard Drive

laptop external hard driveOne of the most beneficial features of external hard drive is the ease of use. After all, external hard drive connects to any PC, via USB or via Firewire-through port, and it can be done even in the regime of “hot” replacement (if supported). A second, but no less important, advantage is the security and privacy of your data. External hard drive with recorded data on it, it is not necessary to keep close to the laptop. So you can backup your important files and keep it completely separate from the laptop so if something happens to one you still have your files.

But still, do you require a laptop external hard drive or not?

My answer to this question is unequivocal – yes. Unfortunately, most laptops are not provided with the possibility of adding a second internal hard drive. Of course, you can set yourself an internal hard drive of larger size, but often to install an external drive can be in most cases more profitable, because in case of same capacity, they can be bought at cheaper price.

What size of laptop external hard drive is better, 2.5 or 3.5 inches?

If you want to use the drive as a secondary drive for storage, then you do fit 3.5-inch model. These drives have higher capacities and are available at low cost. The main drawback of these drives is that they require a separate power supply. Compared with 3.5-inch hard drives, more refined 2.5-inch model is much more expensive. On the other hand, they are much smaller and lighter – they can easily fit in your pocket or bag. Most models do not require AC power, all necessary for the energy flows through the USB-port.

Laptop External Hard Drive Speed

Most external drives are working a little slower than the internal, but it is not associated with the hard drives themselves, but the technology just doesn’t exist yet. As fast as the hard drives get, they’re still limited by the connection. The latest 1TB external hard drives work with the new USB 3.0 ports which is surprisingly fast but a laptop external hard drive is going to be slower than an internal hard drive, it’s still very much a viable choice however.
